Our experimental technique, that will be briefly discussed, allows the recording with high spatial accuracy and at relatively high frequency of the individual positions of pedestrians within crowds. The months-long recording allowed us to obtain unprecedented statistics from which the fair tails of velocity probability distribution functions could be computed and not only the fluctuations around the averages. A model based on a generalised Langevin equation, similar to the ones employed to describe the dynamics of active colloidal particles, will be discussed and compared against experimental data.
