Introduction to Calculus of Variations and its application (I)

In this talk, I will introduce some basic ideas in the calculus of variation such as the derivation of Euler-Lagrange equations and the direct method through examples in classical mechanics, electromagnetism and thermodynamics. In particular, I will introduce the gradient theory of phase transition in this talk.
